Have you ever experience a broken car windscreen to your carÂ windows due to a stone or rock or unidentified object falling onto it while driving along roads or Â Highway in Malaysia like this one when it was crossing the Penang Bridge on its way to Georgetown, Penang from Butterworth, Seberang Perai, Pulau Pinang?
Or have you experienced your car windows shattered and broken due to a grass cutter cutting grass by the road side like this one? You were driving by to have your famous Chinese”dim sum”restaurant breakfast in Ipoh, Perak, Â Malaysia? Suddenly, the grass cutter spun a pebble onto your window accidentally.
Your “dim sum” becomes troublesome worth more than a dime and a huge amount of money has to be paid for the car window/windscreen repair instead of your favorite food. Â Oh dear… that spoils your mood right?
Or it is just your luck that your car parked at your favourite spot and someone just hit your window with a hammer or Â a brick or Â a helmet as they saw some interesting things of value in your car? Like this?
Or the worst has yet to come…like this one where the car glass window at driver’s side was broken and the car was stolen and driven away.
Whatever the circumstances or causes of the cracked or broken car windscreenÂ orÂ breakage of glass window and windscreen together, you still need to replace and repair your windscreen and window. Â It means you are paying money for accidental damage or paying for a crime against you for malicious damage.
Windscreen replacement and repair can be costly depending on which one of the car window or windscreen is broken and what car model and what quality type of tampered glass it is made of.
The best solution is to insure your car windscreen when you renew your car insurance policy and road tax annually. The car windscreen price can be determined by the expert of panel workshops specialised in windscreen repair and replacement business throughout the country in major towns. Â They even offered you between one month Â to three months warranty for any leakage repair.
The insurance premium for windscreen cover is 15% of the cost of the windscreen excluding the cost of labour and tinted film.
Example: If your car is Proton Waja 1.6 automatic year 2008, the windscreen replacement cost is approximately RM800 today. Â Therefore, you pay premium of RM800 x 15% = RM120 in additional to your comprehensive insurance premium and other optional covers.
If your car is a Toyota Vios 1.5 model year 2013 and the windscreen cost is RM1,000. Â You insured RM1,000.
The windscreen insurance premium is RM1,000 x 15% = RM150.
If your car is a BMW525I series and imported model with special tint, the windscreen cost is approimately RM4,000.
You may insure your BMW windscreen for RM4,000 at a premium of RM4,000 x 15% = RM600.
Well folks, if you can leverage on insurance policy to minimise your financial Â pocket leakages like repairing and replacing Â windscreen breakages when you send you precious carÂ over to panel workshopÂ for repair of windscreen by making an insurance claim, it will not cost you an arm and a leg or lose your No Claim Discount (NCD)entitlement.
The windscreen repair and replacement insurance claim does not include the replacement of the rubber holders and bands unless it is specifically included in your policy endorsement. Rubber holders and bands can be damaged during removal of the broken glasses or due to wear and tear and climate. Â Be prepared to pay the extra cost ya.
For insurance policy endorsement to include the tinted film cost besides the car windscreen repair and replacement cost, it has to be notified to and agreed by the insurer to include such coverage benefits.
When making a claim at panel workshop, most panel workshops appointed by the insurers are professionals and they can finish the job in less than an hour but you will have to take precaution not to expose your new car windscreen and the adhesive glue to water or rain for the next two to three hours for the glue setting and dry up. The panel workshop will also help you in the administration in putting up your claim documents and pictures of the windscreen before and after repair and/or replacement. Police report can be waived if the repair is done at panel workshop.
When there is any element of crime involving the breakage of windscreen, you are advised to make a police report and submit it together with your claim documents such as :
1) Car Insurance policy,
2) Driver’s driving license and
3) Owner/driver’s identification card and
4) Car registration card.
If you are sending your car to a non-panel workshop, the insurer may require you to pay the cost of repair first from your own pocket and file the claim later. Â It is mandatory to lodge police report and submit the documents as mentioned above.
Note: Labour and windscreen charges can vary from town to town and depending on the availability of stocks.
